Ajuga reptans, commonly known as bugleweed, is an under-appreciated garden BFF.
The beauty of Ajuga is that although it grows as separated rosettes, the plants intertwine to form a solid carpet. You can walk over it on occasion if you’re gentle.
The pinky-purple leaves are pretty enough but in spring and summer you’ll also see blue-lavender flowers forming in spikes above the foliage. Bees love these flowers and will visit non-stop until the autumn.
Ajuga is low maintenance and looks great in rock gardens, as ground cover, along paths, and in difficult sloping gardens. If you aren’t sure what to plant, Ajuga reptans can fill any low growing space.
Quick facts:
-
What to use me for: I have two words for you. Ground. Cover.
Few plants do ground cover as sexy as I can. I tackle slopes, pathways, carports, and need very little soil to creep across.
-
I grow to: My foliage will reach up to 10-30cms and then my flower spikes will add a little extra.
-
Where to place me: Anywhere except space that gets the full force of the midday sun as my leaves will burn.
-
How far to space me: 10cms between plants will give you a carpet within a year.
-
Soil Conditions: I’m pretty adaptable. I can grow in all soils except waterlogged ones.
-
My features: Low maintenance, best grown in a temperate climate, a stunning display of flowers and coloured foliage and I’m low maintenance
