Thysanolaena Maxima
You may know this beauty better as Tiger Grass and although it looks a lot like bamboo it is a perennial grass – we promise!
Tiger grass forms tight cane-like clumps which are topped with small green leaves that droop downwards. If you’re looking for texture and vibrant green foliage you won’t find it better.
Tall grasses are easy to manage in the garden, especially if you have a compact space and want to avoid invasive plants that get out of hand like bamboo. In fact, Tiger grass is so low maintenance you can pretty much forget about it.
It’s really good to note that I will need a good drink on arrival as I get a bit thirsty after my travels in the box.
Quick Facts:
-
What to use me for: I grow fast and make a great screen or feature plant. I’m happy as a container plant, will fit right into an oriental theme too – versatile is my middle name – I will not produce side shoots or runners! But make sure that you give me plenty of water. I dry out very easily and use a lot of water.
-
I grow to: I can get approximately 2.5-3 metres high and 2 metres wide.
-
I am currently: A cutie tiger cub at 15-25cm high, but I won’t stay small for very long.
-
Where to place me: I like full sun to part shade, please.
-
How far to space me: If you’re after a screen place us about 1.5 metres apart.
-
Soil Conditions: I’m not fussy so long as it’s well-drained, but I do like a good drink. Mulch me and give me a slow-release fertiliser so I can show it off for you.
